Geno’s Donates $50K To Officer’s Family
By Wyatt Earp | December 18, 2008
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Joey Vento and the folks at Geno’s Steaks are amongst the best people in town.
Say what you want about that media-contrived “Speak English” controversy - Joey Vento is a good man, and this is a great gesture for Tim’s family.
Thanks to all involved in this good deed.
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphians’ love of cheesesteaks and generosity helped Geno’s Steaks raise a large amount of cash for the family of a police sergeant killed in the line of duty last month.
Geno’s owner Joey Vento presented the family of Sergeant Timothy Simpson with a check for $50,000 Thursday.
For 24 hours starting December 4, the South Philadelphia eatery collected all proceeds to benefit the family.
Sergeant Simpson was responding to a robbery call when his cruiser was struck by an allegedly intoxicated driver in Port Richmond on November 17.
In addition to their fundraising efforts, Geno’s Steaks has created a “Path of Honor” remembering every Philadelphia police officer and firefighter killed in the line of duty. (H/T - CBS3)
Personally, I love Geno’s. Their steaks are fabulous, and Joey Vento is always good to the cops and firemen of this city. His establishment is the one image I definitely needed to have on my top banner, because he personifies the spirit of Philadelphia.
It’s also where I met Right Wing Prof, Sebastian, and Bitter last summer. Good people, good times.

That is amazing generosity and I hope that his business prospers for many years to come. More businesses (small and corporate) should follow his lead.

Sounds like I have a place to spend my money next time I go to Philly. Good for them.

Deanna - Agreed. He has always been a friend of the PPD and the PFD.
Doghouse - It helps that the food is good, too.
Diller - They’re rare, but they’re out there if you take the time to look.
Rick - Agreed. Truly a great person.
Crankipants - When I was a fat bastard, I would revel in those!
Old NFO - Yeah, the steaks we had were good, but there’s something about Geno’s.

Wish more people were like him. People are just so myopic these days.
