Obama Skips “Salute to Heroes” Ball

By Wyatt Earp | January 21, 2009

mohApparently, it is another “first” for Obama, but probably not one that he (or anyone else, for that matter) would be very proud of.

At least he managed to attend the Youth Inaugural Ball. Kanye West and Kid Rock were there!

According to TSO who was at the “Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball”, this newly sworn-in President for the first time in 56 years blew off the ball (that’s 14 Inaugurations).

Some background on the ball;

The American Legion sponsors the ball, which recognizes recipients of Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award. It started in 1953 for President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s first inauguration.

Event co-sponsors include 13 other veterans service organizations, among them the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. (H/T - This Ain’t Hell)

In fairness, the president did attend the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball - and danced with Army Sergeant Margaret H. Herrera - but to snub 48 MoH recipients is just a classless move. I mean, come on, Mr. President; they’re Medal of Honor winners!

They deserve much better.

His handlers need to understand that there are traditions and groups that shouldn’t be slighted.

They are living Medal Of Honor winners, and I think he will get around to them, one day. For some reason Reason doesn’t win every hand at the table we are dealt, and he will really need those future MOH winners - hope most of them will live through the citation’s reality, but I will still be walking among the stones reading their names if not. Taking some young people with me to teach.

His handlers dislike loathe the military.

I was assigned to the WHMO from 1990-1993. I witnessed a transition that clearly demonstrated this type of aristocracy. The more they claim to be for military families and military members the more apparent it becomes through their actions that their core beliefs are devoid of anything but distrust for the .mil.

Brace yourselves for the resurrection of smarmy liberalism. The “we know what’s best for you peasants” crowd is back and they will be looking to take their pound of flesh.

Randal - You’re kidding, right? Did I destroy the man? Did I libel him? Did I say he is a terrible POTUS? Did I say - like some other person I know - that “He’s not my president? Um, no. I think his snub of MoH winners was a classless move, but I also mentioned something he did right - a lot of blogs wouldn’t mention that. This post was more than fair. If you don’t think so, then fine - that’s your opinion, and you’re welcome to it.

RT - He should have at least made an appearance.

Earl - For these brave soldiers, he should have mad the time. Period.

Jason - If that’s true, the he needs new handlers. You don’t dishonor your troops be slighting them. You especially do not dishonor MoH recipients, because there are so few of them. Again, I think it was a classless move on his part.

What? You were impressed and swooning like the media was by he and Michelle dancing for 45 seconds with the token military members? Wow!

    Um.

You may want to retract this story.

President Obama was not only in attendance at the American Legion’s ball, but he received absolutely rave reviews from several military publications; including that of the AMERICAN LEGION who holds the Salute to Heroes Ball !!!!

If you got your info off of the Cleveland Leader, better look for their apologies coming soon because they are in deep doodoo.

Go to the main American Legion’s website for story and photo and for more info, check out the stories at Stars and Stripes Magazine.

President Obama did not slight ANYONE!

There wasn’t a Salute to Heroes Ball this year. Check out the American Legion , ball’s sponser, before you start rumors. How could he go to a ball that wasn’t.

  10. Wyatt Earp Says:
    January 22nd, 2009 at 7:35 am

Deanna - I wasn’t “swooning,” but I have to give credit to the man for showing up at the CiC Ball. He could have skipped that one, too.

    Randal - Gotcha.

PFC Marks - Really? Well, just so you know, I did not get this story from the Cleveland Leader. If you bothered to read the link, I got it from This Ain’t Hell . . . from the author who was in attendance. I guess he just imagined it?

Jo - I’ll try and write slowly for you, okay. Here. Is. The. Author’s. Report. From. The. Ball. You could have also looked up the original Hat Tip I included in this “rumor,” or bothered to check any of a number of reputable blogs like Little Green Footballs. Charles Johnson does not post anything unless it is checked and double-checked for accuracy.

Having said that, there was a veteran’s ball that was canceled, but it was not the MoH one.

    Nice try, though.

Oh, and here is another article that mentions one of the attendees. I guess the Jackson Sun is in on the conspiracy, too, huh?

Don’t hate, Wyatt! The entertainment industry did help the guy out a lot, he’s just thanking his backers! What did those military types ever do for him? Y’know… other than the same thing that they’ve done for every other citizen of the nation? They aren’t making him feel special enough. *snort*

“As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment – a moment that will define a generation – it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.”

Straight from the POTUS speech. It seems like high praise, but his actions seems to prove otherwise.

  15. Cory Says:

Look at the Obama shills on here lying in two ways…one commenter says the ball didn’t occur this year. LIE Another says Obama DID attend the ball. The ball they mention is NOT the ball in question. Another pro-Obama LIE. Obama is a disgrace to our nation!

  16. docfmf Says:
    January 22nd, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Anyone notice, at the neighborhood ball, he said, I paraphrase, “neighborhood, that’s what it’s all about, we’re all neighbors”. Odd he left out the “HOOD”, what about that?

  17. Alan B Says:

I had prepared a snarky comment but I have deleted it. Let me just say I want to see what he actually DOES. From this part of the world it appears that he may not be so totally dependent on the advice of his more extreme supporters. Perhaps the first time it falls to him to award a M of H he will show he thinks differently.

  18. Gena Says:
    January 22nd, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Wow, I am shocked at these comments. Some of you should really be ashamed of your ignorant views. Here we are, finally getting closer to a more peaceful country, and you feel as though it is ok to bring in hatred to our leader, who has only just begun to give HOPE to so many citizens! I attended the Salute Your Heroes Ball on the 20th, and no, Obama did not come, but Biden did. This does not mean disrespect to the MOH winners. I suggest getting on board with our nations new sense of hope and unity, or you will be left behind. There is no more room for ignorace. Please give peace a chance.

  19. Wyatt Earp Says:
    January 22nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Dorkelina - Yeah, they really should have claimed that they secured Iraq “for Obama!” How ignorant of them. Heh.

Admiral - Hey, at least he isn’t Blago. Blago has worse hair.

Morgan - I’m just annoyed at this one. I am surprised that it hasn’t hit CNN and other mainstream outlets, though. Bawahahahahahahaha!

    John - Well said.

Cory - Don’t fret. New reader/member of the Obama Youth “Gena” sets everyone straight below. Heh.

Docfmf - “Odd” is one way to characterize it.

Alan B - We’ll see. I can’t speak on what he will do in the future, since I am not Marty McFly. I can only comment upon what he has done. The CiC Ball? Good move. The MoH snub? Not so good.

Gena - Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have done three brilliant things here.

    1. You just shot down the “arguments” of your fellow moonbats “PFC Rick Marks” and “Jo” by confirming this story. It has already been confirmed, of course, but when a woman of your obvious intelligence and foresight verifies the snub, I feel a true sense of satisfaction.

    2. Your arguments were concise and to the point. I applaud you on your sentence about “bringing hatred to our leader.” You have opened my eyes, ma’am, because I am sure you would always follow your own advice. Off topic: How do you feel about former President Bush?

I also must give you props for staying on your downloaded message. As all Obamatons know, the word HOPE must always be capitalized, so it can stand out in a paragraph. Bravo!

Finally, I appreciate your use of the oxyMORON. You urge us to get on board with “unity” then immediately threaten that if we do not, we “will be left behind.” Think about that for a moment. Sheer brilliance!

    3. Your reply was the funniest comment that has ever appeared on this blog. That is no small feat, since this site has been open since June, 2005. In the three and a half years that followed, there have been 16,459 comments posted here, and yours was easily the most humorous. You did mean this to be humorous, right? I mean, because you cannot be serious.

Of course, if you are serious, you achieved another brilliant feat: You just made fellow Obama supporter Randal Graves’ head explode. Good show!

Randal, if you’re reading, this broad is on your side. Wow.

  20. Code Monkey Says:

I for one will never march in lockstep behind any politician in this country, refusing to call a mistake a mistake. I don’t care what party they’re from or what title that person has. If being the first President in 56 years to skip the MoH ball is not a mistake, then I obviously have very different priorities than the President.

Questioning a person’s judgement is not bringing on the hate. If my boss made a mistake and I called him on it, he would apologize and correct it. If he thought I was wrong in calling it a mistake, he would explain the logic behind his decision and try to have me see his perspective. He would not ignore me. That is the kind of man he is.

While you may not believe that the President blowing off the MoH ball is a disrespect, there are many that do. Last I checked, we all still have freedom of speech and can express our opinions. Dissent was patriotic for the last eight years. Suddenly it’s ignorance and bringing on the hate?

If hope and unity mean turning a blind eye to lies and broken promises, then I want none of it. Leave me behind, please.

JON - Wow, you really showed me. I surrender to your wisdom. Um, unfortunately, these pictures are from the Commander-in-Chief Inaugural Ball, which I already mentioned he attended in the post. These photos are not from the Salute to Heroes Ball.

Of course, I can’t expect you to read my post . . . or the original post at This Ain’t Hell . . . or even the first paragraph of the article you just cited, now can I? It’s called reading comprehension, kiddo. I’ll give you a D-.

Gena: These are the same people who said we should be backing Bush and the wonderful way he ran this country into the ground for years. According to them, the country was running just fine until the Democrats took over Congress.

Unfortunately, many here are bitter, gun toting Republicans who can’t admit what they really are. I like to stop by and poke them with a stick every once in a while. It makes me giggle. They’re up in arms about Obama not going to a ball. I didn’t realize that the feeling of servicemen (and women) got hurt so easily.

  24. Wyatt Earp Says:

Randal - You’re just upset because the bitter gun-clingers here have learned to not feed the troll anymore.
