A Very Belated Movie Review

By Wyatt Earp | June 27, 2009

I had the extreme pleasure of watching 3:10 to Yuma last week, thanks to the blessed creation that is TiVo. (Showtime was running it.) I didn’t expect a whole lot, since it only grossed about $53 million during its release, but with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale headlining the film, I had to see for myself.

It didn’t disappoint.

The basic plotline is as follows: Rancher Dan Evans (Bale) volunteers to transport captured outlaw/killer/serial robber Ben Wade (Crowe). Evans and a small posse escort Wade to Yuma, in order to catch the 3:10 prison train. There’s only one problem: Wade’s gang is in hot pursuit, with orders to free Wade by any means necessary.

Great dialogue, deep characters, and fantastic gunfights pepper the film, and I ended up watching the last ten minutes three times in a row. It was sheer awesomeness.

Oh, and for the record, after Crowe, Bale, and the awesome gunfights, Ben Foster (as Crowe’s right-hand man Charlie Prince) is the best thing about the movie.

If you liked Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, or Unforgiven, see 3:10 to Yuma, post haste! It’s that good.

Have you seen the 1957 film with Glenn Ford?
    Good stuff.

I’ve seen the remake and yes, it’s real good. I’ve also seen the original and yes, it’s real good as well.

I’ve always felt the part of Ben Wade was tailor-made for Glenn Ford, but Russell Crowe delivered in his own right.

Just saw the ‘07 version two days ago. Loved every second of it.

    didn’t like it.

was okay up until the “we can’t go that way, that’s Apache country”, so they go that way and camp and make a fire so big that it can be seen from space. they then get attacked by the only three Apaches with rifles that can’t hit the broad side of a barn. When Crowe walks into camp with Bale over his shoulder and then rides away with the horses, I was ready to walk out.

    Try Apaloosa.

Mrs. Crankipants – I have not, but I heard it was very god.

Morgan – He was very good in this, but I think he’s good in everything.

Raptor – The last two minutes are fantastic.

Deadcenter – Haven’t see that one, but your Apache point is well-taken.

Yeah, that was pretty good Wyatt. Have you seen “Shoot ‘Em Up” yet? Nothing you’d watch with the kids around, but it’s a hilarious spoof of action movies. I laughed my ass off watching that one.

Woody – I heard the lovely and talented Monica Bellucci is in that. Yummy!
