What better way to start the first day back to work after vacation?
A Philadelphia Police car has been recovered after it was stolen from outside the 35th District building early Saturday morning.
Two officers were inside the building with a prisoner at about 6:15 a.m. When the officers went back outside, the cruiser was gone.
Police said there was an extra set of keys in the cup holder.
The car was found on the 7300 block of North 21st Street at about 2 p.m. and now police are searching for a suspect. (H/T – CBS3)
Wow, I need a vacation.
One of the first things my training officer told me when I came out of the Academy was, “Always lock your doors and take your keys with you.” Now, that’s not always possible, especially after arriving at a priority job, but it’s a good habit to have.
Of course, one wouldn’t think a police car could be stolen out of a police lot, but this is North Philly we’re talking about. Our criminals have huge cojones.

I’m curious about what what happening in South Philly today. We were going to a late brunch at near Ellsworth & Broad, and an insane number of cars passed us (or drove right at us when the folks in front of them were stuck at lights) in a hurry. One was in so much of a hurry that it looks like someone coming through an intersection semi-blocked by a building couldn’t stop in time and hit one of the police cars (looked to be minor damage to both cars). Which, of course, meant more officers on the scene to respond to the accident.
And then I discovered the tradition of using the median as a parking lot. I swear, that city stresses me out while driving only slightly less than Boston.

Yes, what was going on? Two police cars were blocking the south bound lanes of Broad and Carpenter Streets about 3:30 today, and a Septa police car had its flashers on, and was in a hurry to get somewhere. I can’t find anything on the news.

Not the first to be stolen, or the last.

There was a drill, today, but I don’t know if that was it (it involved Septa).

Bitter – I didn’t hear, but if I find out tonight at work, I’ll let ya know.
Mrs. Crankipants – Maybe they were closing your pool due to the eye offending tattoos?
Wagonsux – Agreed. I remember when they stole 818 from the 7-11.
RT – Were they practicing to get the buses to run on time?

Nah, they drained it a week and a half ago. I guess Nutter figured that people wouldn’t be interested in going to the pool in the last two weeks of August. It’s too hot out!
(Forgot to say, that I’m glad the car was found in one piece.)

Glad they recovered the car, but isn’t that a rookie mistake, leaving the keys in the cup holder?

Several years ago (actually closer to ten or more) a State Trooper here in CT put a suspect in the back of his cruiser and returned to the scene to take statements. The suspect managed to get his hands around in front and took off in the vehicle. (I guess he had left the vehicle running for the air conditioning.) For the rest of the day troopers driving Champagne colored cruisers (about 25% of the fleet) were being pulled over all over the western half of the state.
