We Remember Chuck

By Wyatt Earp | October 31, 2011

Four years ago today, Philadelphia Police Officer Charles “Chuck” Cassidy was shot in the line of duty. He unknowingly walked in on a robbery in progress at the Dunkin Donuts, 6600 N. Broad Street. His murderer is a piece of garbage named John “Jordan” Lewis, who spun around and shot Chuck in the head at point blank range. Chuck died the next day. Five days later, Lewis was captured in Miami, Florida. He has since been sentenced to death for the crime.

I was working in the division that day, and we all heard the call come out. Almost every officer and detective in the building grabbed their guns and ran out the door, as the scene is only seven blocks from our divisional HQ. It was bad, worse than we thought, and while we feared the worst, we prayed for the best. Sadly, our prayers were not answered.

I’m working in the division today, and I doubt there will be a lot of jovial conversation. Like the previous four years, most of us will just be going through the motions. We continue to pray for him and his family.

RIP Officer Cassidy – I remember his death like it was yesterday. I’ll say a prayer for him and his family today. So sorry you lost a brother Wyatt – prayers to the rest of the Philly PD, I hope you all stay safe.

And how many liberal idiots does this Lewis guy have clamoring for his release; saying he was ‘misunderstood’, was framed, was only arrested and convicted via raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacism, etc.?

Thanks for the reminder, Wyatt. Adding Chuck and his family and friends to the list in today’s litany.
    Roll safe, friend.

Howdy Wyatt – Thank you for reminding us of Chucks murder – not having lived in Philly at the time, I don’t recall reading about it but I’m glad the murderer was caught and is sentenced to death.
Do you think the sentenced will be carried out? I know that the death of his murderer won’t bring Chuck back, but hopefully it will provide some closure for his family and friends.
Be extra careful out there today Wyatt; Halloween seems to bring out even more crazy and dangerous people than usual.
    RIP Officer Cassidy.

    Ferrell – I only wish.

Scarlett – Drove past the DD on the way in. Still can’t go back there.

Ranba – Strangely, not really any. Chuck was beloved by most of the people here. He was big on community policing, and was very outgoing with the folks who live here.

Bob – Thanks. Halloween has never been the same since that day, but you do your best to get through it without the kids seeing the sorrow.

Real – Lewis will die in prison. PA doesn’t execute people. We just don’t. It’s a shame.

I didn’t know Chuck and don’t know any of you here, but have my own memories of brothers lost in years past. I’ll say an extra prayer for Chuck’s family and for those of you who were brothers in arms. When you get home, give your kids a hug, you’ll need it more than they will.

Tony F – Especially today. Get to take them out tonight for Halloween, so at least that’ll be a distraction.

LDIV – Not going to stop anytime soon.

    Wyatt:
Time never makes things like this easier, in spite of what many believe…it just makes it more defined in our minds and lives.
And you work through it, but you NEVER forget.

My continued condolences to the family and the department.

And may this Jordan burn in hell as a smiling person pulls the switch on the day he gets his.(hey,. I’ll volunteer in a heartbeat, but I know I’ll have to wait in a VERY long blue line)

    Roll safe out there, people.
